List the jobs you take: how homeowners find a handyman for small work
Homeowners search for the fix they need. Show each job, your towns and your limits, so the right calls reach you and the wrong ones stop.
A loose railing. A door that sticks. A TV that needs to go on the wall. When something small breaks, homeowners type the fix into Google, like “TV mounting near me” or “drywall patch.”
There is plenty of this work. In Angi’s 2025 pulse survey of 1,000 homeowners who hired a pro in the past year, 71% said they were focused on preventive maintenance to avoid bigger problems later. 71% also said they had put off a planned project. Upkeep and small repairs keep coming either way.
The question is whether your business shows up for the jobs you want.
Why “handyman” alone isn’t enough
Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. A profile that only says “handyman” gives Google little to match against “fence gate repair.”
The fix is to name your jobs, everywhere.
Step 1: Write down the jobs you want more of
Make a short list. Group jobs the way homeowners think about them:
- Mounting and hanging: TVs, shelves, mirrors, curtain rods
- Walls: drywall patches, paint touch-ups, caulking
- Doors and hardware: sticking doors, locks, handles, weather stripping
- Outside: fence and gate repair, deck boards, gutters
- Assembly: furniture, playsets, storage
Then write a second list: jobs you don’t take. That list matters too.
Step 2: Put the jobs on your Google profile
Google says to choose one specific main category and to use only a few extra categories. It says not to add a category for every product or service.
So pick the category that best fits your business, then add each job to your profile’s services list. Use the same words a homeowner would type.
Step 3: Give each group a section on your site
A simple site with one section per job group does a lot of work. For each group, add:
- A few plain sentences about what you do
- Two or three photos of real jobs you finished
- The towns you cover, by name
- A call button
Step 4: Be honest about your service area
Most handymen go to the customer. Google’s rules for service-area businesses say to hide your home address and keep your service area within about two hours of driving. Pick the towns you actually want to drive to. Fewer, closer jobs often beat a big map full of windshield time.
Step 5: Say what you don’t do, and why
Licensing rules differ by state, and they shape which jobs you can take.
In California, for example, the Contractors State License Board says that since January 1, 2025, unlicensed workers may take jobs under $1,000 only if the work needs no permit and they hire no one to help. Their ads must say they are not licensed.
Check your own state’s rules. Then say plainly on your site and profile which jobs you hand off to licensed trades. “We don’t do electrical panels or gas lines” saves you calls you can’t take and earns trust from the people who read it.
Your checklist
- A written list of the jobs you want, grouped the way homeowners think
- One specific main category on your Google profile, plus a few extras at most
- Every job added to your profile’s services
- One section per job group on your site, with real photos
- Address hidden; service area kept to towns you want to drive to
- Your state’s licensing limits checked, and the jobs you skip stated plainly
